Tonight at Route 66 west of Albuquerque, N.M.: Reclaiming her mythical crown for women’s boxing pound-for-pound throne, Albuquerque’s Holly Holm outboxed former conqueror Anne Sophie Mathis, of France, with scores of 96-94, 99-91 and 97-93. It may not have been the prettiest fight, but Holm employed a hit-and-hold routine through ten rounds, rarely giving Mathis a chance to land anything significant. The welterweight WBF, IBA and WBAN belts were at stake.
Raymond “Hollywood” Montes (5-2, 4 KO’s) KO’d Los Mochis fighter Jaime Gutierrez (4-6) at 1:37 of the first round. Albuquerque’s Cristian Cabral (3-0, 2 KO’s) took care of Socorro’s Victor Silva (0-1) winning by TKO at 1:27 of the fourth round. Belen’s debuting Gene “The Kid” Perez (1-0) outpointed Albuquerque’s Eric Gonzales (1-2-1) with scores of 40-36 x 3. John “Smiley” Herrera (2-3-1) bloodied up Bryan Garcia (7-19, 2 KO’s) and took a unanimous decision win with scores of 40-35 and 40-36 x 2. In the opener Jose Luis “El Guero” Sanchez (1-0, 1 KO) took out Farmington’s Guy Youell (0-1) at 1:13 of the fourth round.
