In a great matchup of cruiserweight strongmen, WBO champion Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) had to dig deep to win a twelve round unanimous decision over 42-year-old former WBA titleholder Firat Arslan (21-6-2, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at the Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle/Westfalen, Germany. Arslan, who has no reverse gear, applied great pressure on the rugged Huck, especially over the first half of the fight, while Huck landed fierce combinations of his own. Arslan slowed down a bit midway as the champion had the edge in the later rounds. Scores were 115-113, 115-113, 117-111. Huck is never in a bad fight.
WBO #4 light heavyweight Dustin Dirks (26-0, 19 KOs) scored an ugly twelve round unanimous decision over Cleiton Conceicao (18-5-2, 14 KOs). Dirks dropped Conceicao in round two, and Conceicao then clinched his way through ten more uneventful rounds. Scores were 117-107, 117-108, 120-104.
Heavyweight Edmund Gerber (22-0, 14 KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision over Darnell “The Ding-A-Ling Man” Wilson (24-16-3, 20 KOs). Wilson staggered Gerber badly at the end of round one and was unlucky that the bell rang. After that Gerber did enough to win by scores of 79-73, 79-73, 79-74.
Light heavyweight Robert Woge (10-0, 9 KOs) battered Serhiy Demchenko (14-4, 10 KOs), getting a referee’s stoppage in round five.
