Huerta-Hirales Preview

By Felipe Leon

Boxing returns with a bang to “America’s Finest City” San Diego, CA, when Golden Boy Promotions and Jorge Marron Productions return to the Four Points Sheraton Hotel to present “Test of Courage” televised by spanish language Telefutura’s weekly boxing series “Solo Boxeo Tecate” this Friday night, January 28th. In the eight round main event, highly touted featherweight Charles Huerta (16-1, 9KOs) makes the short trek south from Paramount, CA, to take on the undefeated Raul Hirales Jr (11-0-1, 7KOs) of La Paz, MX.

Since his only loss back in ’09, Huerta has strung together six consecutive wins including a sixth round KO of Jonathan Arias and in his last bout last December, a unanimous decision over Arturo Camargo. Hirales, who usually fights as a super bantamweight. has not faced opponents as strong as Huerta, with his toughest competition to date being Tijuana’s Fernando “Ferocito” Vargas who he fought to a draw late last year.

In a special attraction, quick fisted southpaw Gary Russell Jr (13-0, 9KOs) takes on Feider Viloria (23-7-1, 16KOs) in an eight round affair. Russell Jr. of Washington D.C. is an amateur standout who closed out his pre-professional career with a 163-10 record and a berth at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before turning pro in ’09. The twenty-seven year old Viloria, the more experienced of the two in the punch for bucks trade, has traveled the world from his home base of Colombia as a tough nosed opponent for the likes of Oscar Larios, Antonio Escalante and Ramon Martinez among others in a nine year pro career.

Hard hitting middleweight Bastie Samir (8-0, 8KOs) of Las Vegas, NV, by way of Ghana keeps the ball rolling in his fifth fight in four months as he takes on Loren Myers (7-10-1, 2KO) of Fresno, CA, in a six rounder while local favorite Amaris “Diamond Girl” Quintana (3-0-2) goes after her first pro KO win versus Blanca Raymundo (0-1) in a junior flyweight four round female bout.

Two other bouts flesh out the card.
