Hyland headlines in Rochester

By Bob Caico

Novice promoter and New York’s first licensed Latino female boxing promoter, Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons, has put together a seven-bout card in her native Rochester, NY. Vazquez-Simmons’ Pretty Girl Productions, LLC will stage their first ever card Wednesday at Shalen’s Stadium (home of the professional soccer Rochester Rhinos).

The main event will feature Ireland’s undefeated featherweight, Patrick “The Punisher” Hyland (26-0) against Carlos Fulgencio (19-7-1) of the Dominican Republic. Nicole Elizabeth Polizzi, commonly known as “Snooki” of New York City, manages Hyland. Hyland will be making his sixth start on United States soil and third straight here this year since relocating to Newburgh, NY.

Also on the “Summer Throwdown” card will be local favorites, Kenny Abril (12-5-1) who will be challenged by veteran Doel Carrasquillo (16-20-1) of Lancaster, PA, and middleweight Willie Monroe, Jr. (10-1). Darnell Jiles, Jr. (8-3-1), hard luck Jamell Tyson (3-7-2) and Harvey Murray (4-3-2) round out other Rochester City boxers on the card.

Undefeated female super featherweight Natasha Spence (4-0-1) of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada will take on Arkansas’ Lucretia Meacham (3-8) in a six-round contest.

Ms. Vazquez-Simmons has strong personal feelings on the sport, “The reason I entered into this field was due to my passion for the sport and a need to revitalize boxing in Rochester. There’s a myth that boxing has died … I want to prove that it is still alive, Just needed a spike of energy. I think the fans that come out to the event will be in for a treat.”
