The IBF/USBA 28th Annual Convention gets underway today, May 31 at the Paris Hotel & Casino is Las Vegas, NV. “I expect this to be a successful convention,” stated IBF President Daryl Peoples. “We have a great number of attendees for this convention with representatives from all over the world attending. I believe we will have an excellent turnout overall.”
Convention goers will be treated to a Welcome Cocktail on Tuesday evening to get reacquainted and meet new members as well. However, one of the most exciting events and one that many of the convention attendees look forward to is the “Meet the Champions” Cocktail. Slated to attend the event this year are Zab Judah, IBF Junior Welterweight Champion; Ulises Solis, IBF Junior Flyweight Champion; Christian Mijares, IBF Junior Bantamweight Champion; Jennifer Retzke, IBF Female Junior Middleweight Champion; Benjamin Simon, IBF Intercontinental Middleweight Champion; and Nikola Stevanovic, IBF Intercontinental Junior Middleweight Champion.
Additionally, the attendees will have the opportunity to meet Emmy Award-winning Mexican journalist Araceli Martinez-Rose, author of the soon to be released book, “The Business of Pain” – the story of former world champion Gabriel Ruelas. Martinez-Rose will be on hand to promote her book and will hold a discussion of the book, and her experiences while writing it, for the convention attendees on Thursday, June 2.
“Ms. Martinez-Rose will be well-received at our convention and I especially want to thank her for donating both versions of her book (Spanish & English) and a set of boxing gloves, all autographed by her, for a special raffle,” elaborated Mr. Peoples. All proceeds of the raffle will go to the IBF’s Special Assistance for Retired Boxers Fund (SARB). SARB was created over two decades ago to provide financial help to retired boxers that are experiencing monetary difficulties. Later, scholarships were incorporated to this fund for which the children and grandchildren of IBF/USBA members are eligible for. The IBF/USBA raises a considerable amount of money during its annual convention for this fund. “We expect Ms. Martinez-Rose’s contribution will boost the collections for the SARB fund during this convention,” added Peoples.
Aside from the entertaining events during the convention, informative sessions and seminars have been prepared by a group of expert panelists in their respective fields in the sport of boxing. Renowned referee Robert Byrd will be joined by referee Jack Reiss to present the referees seminar. New York State Athletic Commissioner and former boxing judge Melvina Lathan, along with boxing judges Adalaide Byrd, Glenn Trowbridge and Robert Hoyle will direct the judges seminar. The medical seminar will be conducted by doctors William Lathan, Richard Weinstein, Paul Wallace and Anthony Curreri. In addition to these seminars, two short sessions have been added to this year’s convention schedule addressing handwrapping and scorecard design.
More to come on the IBF/USBA 28th Annual Convention throughout the week.
