Ilie upsets Erittu

By Giampiero Marras at ringside

In a stunner, underdog Giulian Ilie of Romania stopped previously unbeaten Salvatore Erittu of Italy in round two and clinched the vacant IBF I/C title at 200 lbs. Ilie (now 18-4-2) was coming from another win on Italian soil, having defeated Cristian Dolzanelli in December last year. Erittu (now 21-1) was supposed to restore the Italian pride but clearly Ilie had other plans as he started at full speed and tried to bring the fight to the much taller Erittu. After an even first round, Ilie was able to find his distance and connected with a clean right hook to Erittu’s chin: the Italian contender was up but still wobbled and, after another barrage by Ilie, referee Vincent Dupas of France stopped the fight for good.

On the undercard, 17-years-old Joe Calzaghe Jr., the son of former world champ Joe Calzaghe, had his first ever amateur bout drawing versus Marco Satta in three.

Alberto Mura promoted.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
