Indonesian Update: Lopez edges Espino

By Jeff Pamungkas

Indonesian super bantamweight Carlos Lopez (26-9, 7 KOs) survived Filipino bomber Cirilo Espino (16-10-2, 10 KOs) to win the vacant WBO Aspac title on Sunday night at TVRI Studio in Jakarta, Indonesia. Lopez’ counter strategy worked well in the beginning of the fight by landing some clean punches with a hit and run strategy. Espino upped the aggression in round seven, rocking Lopez several times in this round. Lopez’ countering and stepping back strategy could anticipate Espino’s dangerous attacks in later rounds. In round twelve Lopez was almost knocked down, but he survived with a clinch to his opponent’s waist. The judges scored the fight 115-114, 115-114 and 115-115 for a majority decision for Carlos Lopez, the new WBO Aspac super bantamweight champion.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
