The highly anticipated WBO super middleweight world championship collision between unbeaten fighters Denis Inkin and Karoly Balszay has been elevated to main event status tonight in Magdeburg, Germany. The decision was made by ZDF to feature the bout on live German television after Yuri Barashian was unable to make weight for his light heavyweight world title challenge against longtime champion Zsolt Erdei. Inkin (34-0, 24 KOs) and Balzsay (19-0, 14 KOs) were supposed to meet for the WBO interim belt last September in Hamburg, however Balzsay suffered a cut in training. Inkin then defeated late sub Fulgencio Zuniga and was crowned full WBO champion after Joe Calzaghe relinguished the WBO title. He will now make his first defense against his WBO #1 rated stablemate on the first “Universum Champions Night” of 2009. Erdei vs Barashian will still take place on the card, but Erdei retains the WBO belt win or lose.
