Italian Boxing Update

By Enrico ‘Erik’ Crociati

Last Friday was a good and interesting evening for Italian boxing, Andrea Sarritzu retained his European flyweight title and he might be ready now for another challenge for the World crown. Still, that was not the only action featuring an Italian fighter, as two always-active promoters staged different cards on Italian soil.

Italian cruiserweight champion Salvatore Erittu (19-0, 7 KOs) won another international title on Friday night in Porto Torres, Italy, stopping co-challenger Adnan Buharalija (21-8, 14 KOs) of Bosnia in four rounds. With the win, Erittu earns the vacant IBF Mediterraneo title at 200lb. The performance of hard hitting Erittu was very impressive, he started match very strongly with a great array of punches at his disponsal and in round four a well timed right hook dumped Buharalija on the canvas for the full count. On the undercards, heavyweight Gianluca Mandras (6-1, 4 KOs) dominated Serbian fighter Sejfula Berisa (6-19-2, 1 KOs) and stopped him in round two.

The card was staged by Boxing Professional Team

Also on the same evening, in Terni, Umbria, Italian super bantamweight champion Massimo Deidda (6-2-1, 1 KO) retained his title from the first time in front of his home crowd by stopping in a ten round former national champion and veteran warrior David Chianella (16-7-2, 5 KOs) who fought Paul Hyland and Domenico Urbano in his 7-year long career.

Chianella proved every bit as tough but Deidda’s youth and superior boxing skills were evident, the moment of truth and the end of the fight was in the tenth round, Deidda with a a brutal barrage of punches dropped an exhausted Chianella that was then stopped by his corner.

The card was promoted by Armando De Clemente.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
