Marcel Japtha stopped Willie Mabasa in the fourth round of a scheduled ten to win the vacant Gauteng featherweight title at the Westbury Recreation Centre near Johannesburg on Saturday night. The bill was presented by Peoples Promotions and Westside Boxing Academy. Mabasa 14-7 came out fast at the first bell throwing left and right combinations to the head as he surprised Japhta 10-1; 7. Mabasa continued at the same pace through rounds two and three as Japhta began to score with counter punches to the body. In the fourth round the rugged Japtha with blood leaking from his nose came back at Mabasa and hurt him with a stiff right to the jaw. After another flurry of punches and with Mabasa not fighting back referee Alfred Buqwana stepped in to call the fight off at 2 minutes 31 seconds into the round.
In a junior middleweight encounter Nkululeko Mhlongo was just too strong for Johannes Pietersen and stopped him at 2 minutes 50 seconds into the first round of a scheduled six and in another scheduled six, light flyweight Fusani Monte beat Ada Sixanti on a fourth round technical knockout.
