Jhonny Gonzalez responds to Caballero

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Jhonny Gonzalez has responded to quotes by WBA featherweight titleholder Celestino Caballero in the Panamanian media calling him a coward and claiming Jhonny is afraid of him. “I recognize Indonesian Chris John as the true WBA featherweight champion,” said Gonzalez. “He’s the super champion and I would like to unify titles with a very prestigious world champion. My next fight is with Ponce De Leon who deserves all my respect for being a great fighter and I can’t make plans before this fight. I will not go into contradictions and drawing attention to this in the international press. My goal is to fight on September 15. I respect all the fighters and world champions but now I’m focusing on my training to do my best in the ring.” Gonzalez has been training for several weeks at the Romanza Gym with Nacho Beristain for his next fight with his compatriot Daniel Ponce de Leon on September 15 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Mexican Independence Day on an event presented by Golden Boy Promotions.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
