Jhonny Gonzalez Statement

By Gabriel F. Cordero

“It was a tough fight,” said former WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez, who was dethroned in Las Vegas by Daniel Ponce De Leon via technical decision after an unintentional headbutt. “Ponce’s style was complicated for me but I was doing my fight and until then I’m sure we were winning the fight. Unfortunately in Las Vegas it’s not so easy and again we came out with a strange decision and this time it was my turn. I had hopes of impartiality and leaving with the victory. Now I hope for the opportunity for revenge and it’ll be another story.”

Gonzalez’ promoter Promociones del Pueblo is seeking a WBC-ordered direct rematch against Ponce De Leon. According to the Gonzalez camp, the rematch is warranted not only because there was a rematch clause in the contract, but because they say Ponce De Leon delivered a long list of illegal blows without receiving any warning from referee Kenny Bayless. They are asking that Ponce’s first defense against Gonzalez take place at a venue chosen by Promociones del Pueblo and that the fight be officiated by appointees of the WBC rather than from “a commission that is best known for its irregularities.”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
