Mexican former two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez has publicly expressed his desire to send a special challenge to current WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares.
“I would have liked a rematch with Ponce de Leon, but now the champion is Abner Mares and I want to fight for the title. I’m sure I can beat Mares and get back the title. I’m waiting because he’s saying he’s not afraid of anyone.”
Gonzalez is not the only one interested to fight against Mares. Another Mexican, WBC silver champ Robinson Castellanos, has been named as WBC official challenger after his victory in Panama against former champion “Pelenchin” Caballero, but Jhonny is confident that he’ll face Mares this year.
