Both WBA featherweight super champion Chris John and his challenger Satoshi Hosono expressed their disappointment after their bout, which ended as a technical draw in round three following headbutts that created severe cuts on John’s temple and forehead on Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. Referee Rafael Ramos waved his hands to stop the fight on the advice of the ring doctor after he examined John’s wounds in the neutral corner for the second time.
The fight itself was very intense since the beginning when Hosono threw power shots to the body, and John decided to come forward and trade punches with Hosono, the first Japanese boxer coming to Indonesia for a world title belt.
“I’m very disappointed with this result, as I’ve prepared for months,” said John, whose undefeated record became 48-0-3 with 22 KOs.
Separately, Hosono in the dressing room was also disappointed. “His cut is in the forehead, and it should not disturb his vision. I landed good body shots, and I had a good chance to win the fight,” Hosono (23-2, 17 KOs) stated very sadly.
In the co-feature bout, South Africa’s Simpiwe Vetyeka (24-2, 14 KOs) surprised the crowd with a TKO victory over the country’s second hero, Daud Cino Yordan (30-3, 23 KOs) in the last round of twelve. Yordan was aggressive, but Vetyeka was slicker and made Yordan’s attacks ineffective. Yordan was going for KO in the last round, but he was exhausted, and a counter punch from the challenger dropped him to the canvas. Yordan got up, but Vetyeka battered him to the ropes, promting referee Tim Austin to quickly stop the fight and declare the new IBO featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyaka.
“We’ll evaluate, and we’ll decide what’s the next steps later,” said Damianus Yordan, the brother/trainer of the dismantled champion.
Vetyeka, after the match commented that he found Yordan’s weaknesses during the fight, and he could utilize those weaknesses to lead his victory. During the pre-fight press conference, Vetyeka’s trainer Nick Durandt said that after Vetyeka defeated Yordan, he would come again to Jakarta to defeat Chris John. Will it happen?
Angelo Hyder of Dragon Fire Promotions said that at this moment he couldn’t confirm anything concerning rematches of both world title fights which ended in disappointing fashion for Indonesians. Hyder explained that there were several options, and it should be discussed with concerned parties before it comes to any decisions.
