Welterweight Dashon Johnson improved to (10-2-3) Saturday night in Renton, Washington with a decisive six round unanimous decision over rugged Mike Lucero (12-16) on the debut card of GUY PROMOTIONS. The Johnson-Lucero fight was a rematch of a draw the two fought two months ago.
In that earlier bout, Johnson, who hails from Escondido, CA, seemed to fall into Lucero’s trap of fighting on the inside. This time out Johnson stayed on the outside for the majority of the bout and picked Lucero apart with long fast jabs. When they did get on the inside, Johnson used his speed to beat Lucero to the punch and then spin away before the stocky Portland native could fire back. Scores were 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56.
Johnson’s trainer Dave Kraal said, ”Dashon fights smartly. He has always bounced back from draws or losses with a win in the rematch. He makes good adjustments. I have to always remind myself that he only had seven amateur fights and he’s still learning.”
Canada’s Aubrey improved to (4-1, 3 KOs) with a hard fought decision over Darren Anzai in a middleweight four-rounder. There were no knockdowns and neither fighter was hurt during the bout, although Morrow landed some very heavy left hooks and looping right hands. Anzai switched up from southpaw to conventional stances throughout the contest but Morrow had little trouble making the adjustments. Midway through round four, an accidental head butt broke Anzai’s nose and the bout was stopped by Referee Paul Field. The partial fourth round was scored and Morrow was awarded the fight on a majority decision with scores of 39-37, 39-37 and 38-38.
Seattle heavy weight Vincent Thompson made quick work of Rob Griswell of Portland, Oregon with a first round KO. Thompson who in previous bouts played the role of a boxer changed tactics and swarmed Griswell from the opening bell. A two handed body attack kept Griswell pinned on the ropes and right uppercuts and hooks did the damage as Griswell visited the canvas twice before referee Paul Field waved off the onslaught.
The bout was a success for first time promoter Chris Jones’ GUY PROMOTIONS, whose next card is August 14 at the Tacoma Elks Club. Tickets are on sale at guypromotions.com . See you at the fights.
