Jones-Lebedev Rematch Update

By Gabriel F. Cordero

A source has told that representatives of Panamanian former world champion Guillermo “El Felino” Jones and the Russian world champion Denis Lebedev have been granted an extension of the negotiation period from the WBA for the cruiserweight world title rematch. Don King Productions Inc and Vladimir Hryunov now have until October 31 to negotiate, if they don’t reach an agreement then the fight will go to a purse bid in which 55% will go to the champion and 45% to the challenger. The WBA World Championship Committee stripped Jones of the “regular” title for having tested positive for diuretic furosemide in his fight against Lebedev on May 17 in Moscow, Russia.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
