Unbeaten jr. welterweight Jose Benavidez, Jr. has returned to Hollywood, California’s Wild Card Boxing Gym, to prepare for his upcoming fight with trainer Freddie Roach. Benavidez, Jr. is scheduled to fight on September 17 th at the Bluewater Resort and Casino in Parker, Arizona, and will be featured as the co-main event on this nationally televised card, alongside Mercito Gesta (22-0-1, 21KOs). Their respective opponents are TBD. Benavidez will again be donating a portion of his purse for this fight to Phoenix Children’s Hospital as well. “We started training at the Wild Card this week, and look forward to staying focused, and getting ready for September 17 th . We are excited to be back in Hollywood and working with Freddie,” said Jose Benavidez, Sr., Benavidez, Jr.’s trainer and manager.
Jose Benavidez, Jr., was the youngest ever Golden Gloves Champion, and in 2010 received a special dispensation from the Nevada State Athletic Commission to become a professional boxer at the age of 17.
After training with Roach, and sparring with world champions Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan, Benavidez returned to Phoenix to continue to train under the tutelage of his father, Jose Benavidez, Sr. at Central Boxing Gym. On June 11th, Benavidez improved his record to 12-0, 11KOs, fighting as the main event in front of a hometown crowd. Benavidez is promoted by Top Rank.
