On Monday, a mass was held in honor of former WBC President Jose Sulaiman at the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City. Hundreds of friends and members of the boxing fraternity were on hand to remember one the best known figures of contemporary world boxing. “It was very hard to be sad because the demonstration of affection of many people in all possible ways. My dad was a great fighter, so he tried and fought and dreamed and in the end it was worth his work,” said Mauricio Sulaiman.

Jose Sulaiman’s ashes will rest for a few days at his home in Lindavista, and then be transferred to French Pantheon where they will remain forever. Last October, Sulaiman had undergone a delicate heart operation, from which he never recovered.

Our eternal gratitude to a great leader who knew how to treat the press as friends and companions. Don Jose Sulaiman was a passionate man, lover of boxing and photography, an entrepreneur without fear of being judged and an icon of universal sport. Thanks for your friendship and attention. Rest in peace my friend.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
