Joyi set for title challenge

By Ron Jackson

South Africa’s Nkosinathi Joyi will challenge Raul Garcia of Mexico for his IBF mini flyweight belt in South Africa thanks to promoter Branco Milenkovic. Milenkovic of Branco Sports Promotions won the purse bid to promote the fight in South Africa when he pipped Bob Arum of Top Rank with a bid of R1166660. Top Rank put in a bid of R911455.

The 26-year-old Joyi 20-0; 15 earned the right to challenge for the belt after outpointing Filipino Florante Condes in East London on June 26 last year. The southpaw Garcia 27-0-1; 16 won the belt in June 2008 when he beat Florante Condes on a split decision and has made successful against Jose Luis Varela on two occasions, Ronald Barrera and Sammy Gutierrez.

The fight is scheduled to take place on March 26 but the venue will depend on the help of sponsors and could be either East London or Johannesburg.

    Help Support®

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
