Juarez not fighting Saturday!

By Karl Freitag

Hopes to find a new opponent for Rocky Juarez have failed. The name of WBO #15 featherweight Mario Santiago had been mentioned as a stand in for WBA champion Chris John, who had to pull out due to illness. “It looks like it’s going to be a Victor Ortiz-Marcos Maidana showcase [on HBO] and it looks like we’re going to go with one fight,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer today. “…Rocky won’t fight at all. There was an opponent which Rocky turned down and it’s not so easy to find somebody at the last minute who is acceptable to all parties involved, the network and the fighters. The managers for Rocky were actually on board but it was really Rocky who turned it down.” Updating us on the Chris John situation, Schaefer said, “it’s too bad [because] Chris John really wanted the fight and he had contracted some sort of blood illness. He tried to work through it, but last Saturday he was sparring and at the end of the third round he collapsed and it was obviously apparent that he couldn’t fight and unfortunately he had to withdraw. So are we disappointed? Yes we are, but at the same time the safety of the fighter comes first.”
Ortiz and Maidana both sounded confident today. “I’m going to test his punch and see if he’s really as strong as they say he is,” said Maidana (25-1, 24 KOs), who is coming off a close split decision loss against WBA champion Andreas Kotelik in a world title bid, a result Maidana stated was a hometown decision. Ortiz (25-1, 24 KOs) commented, “I’ve had twenty six fights and in my eyes they’ve all been world championship fights.”

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.
