Judah-Demyanenko Update

By Alexey Sukachev

Looks like a proposed fight between former IBF/WBO light welterweight and undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah (38-6, 26 KOs) and undefeated WBO #7, WBC #9 and WBA #10 ranked Kazakh prospect Vitaly Demyanenko (18-0, 11 KOs) isn’t as close as Kazakh media has been reporting. “Zab’s response to a challenge from Demayneko’s camp was ‘Vitaly who?,'” said Demyanenko’s agent Yuri Fedorov. “Vitaly is 18-0 and the current regional champion with the WBO/WBC/WBA where he is rated #5, #9 and #10 respectively. And where is Zab Judah – #8 with the WBA… so from the outset he plays a more prominent figure than Zab in the overall scheme of things with the current welterweight ratings.”

Fedorov continued, “Judah who? You tell the world you’re a former four-time champion – yet I can only see three on your resume. You first won the title against Jan Piet Bergman then lost it to Kostya Tszyu (KO’d in round two if my memory serves me right); the second time you secured it against DeMarcus Corley and lost it to Corey Spinks; the third time you win against Corey Spinks losing to Carlos Baldomir… are you referring to an IBC Title against an opponent, whose record was 20 wins from 28 outings and had only managed one win in his previous 4 fights, who you beat on points? Now let’s look at your own recent form having only managed to rack up five (5) wins out of your last ten (10) fights? Look at your last opponent – he had 43 fights and only 22 wins and he has been previously kayoed eight times. He’d managed only 3 wins in his last 6 coming of 2 consecutive losses, where in his fight prior to you has lost to an opponent with a record of 23-13? The last meaningful fight you won was back in 2005 against Corey Spinks.”

The way the Demyanenko camp sees it, Judah should be glad to have an opportunity to challenge a fighter rated higher than him in the ratings. “I am the person happy to travel to your backyard putting my ranking and titles on the line,” said Demyanenko. “Grab your chance!”
