“Only Adamek knows if he can again dedicate himself 100 percent to the sport of boxing. He’s financially secured, has a great family, and if Adamek decides to fight is because of his competitive spirit, not because he has to. Those are tough questions and I expect that Tomasz should have weeks to make the right decision. No matter what his decision will be, Main Events will always support our champion; we understand the reasoning behind both options,” said Main Events President Kathy Duva in a Fightnews.com interview.
As a president of Main Events, which represents both Adamek and Glazkov, you couldn’t reveal your prediction before the fight. But Adamek was for you a slight favorite to beat younger, but much less experienced challenger.
It’s true; I thought Adamek was a favorite because of his heart, toughness and many winning battles on top level on our sport. But “Czar” brought a perfect plan to the ring, started well, fast and was very busy and accurate. This is the only way you can beat a fighter with Adamek’s pedigree – being perfect. At Main Events, we knew that Glazkov is a excellent, top defender and this is the main reason why Adamek landed just 23 percent of his punches. Now the secret is out. In this fight “Slava” added also good offensive skills, added his punch accuracy proving, what we knew all along – that he belongs in boxing heavyweight elite. We would like him to fight on NBC maybe in June or August, with a less demanding fighter than Adamek. We will not rush Glazkov into anything. As a promotional company, we want to develop his skills, make him the best he can be.
Glazkov is now the #2 IBF ranked fighter on a clear path to challenge Wladimir Klitschko. And Adamek?
I will never influence a fighter’s decision what he should do next. Only the fighter can answer the question if he wants and can continue his career. Only Adamek knows if he can again dedicate himself 100 percent to the sport of boxing. He’s financially secure, has a great family, and if he decides to fight it’s because of his competitive spirit, not because he has to. Those are tough questions and I expect that Tomasz should have weeks to make the right decision. Right for him. No matter what his decision will be, Main Events will always support our champion, we understand the reasoning behind both options.
For me Adamek is still a top-10 heavyweight in the division with only one dominant fighter, IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko. If Adamek decides that he wants to give his best, last try, there are fights for him against top Polish heavyweights, he can also fight in US.
Would you agree that in his case, with his popularity, his heart, character and style of fighting, Adamek could have more offers from top fighters because he lost, rather than if he would beat Glazkov?
One of the writers mentioned after the fight that Glazkov let him come back in the last two rounds of their fight. “The Czar” did not give Adamek anything – it was the pure Adamek warrior spirit, heart and character that fans and TV executives loved. You could be right about other fighters thinking that he will be an easier opponent. A rematch with Cris Arreola, no matter if he will lose or win against Bermane Stiverne, would be a very interesting proposition for boxing fans and both fighters. There could be more offers in the future, but for now, all of this talk has to be put on hold. Adamek deserves our respect, deserves peace of mind before we’ll know what’s next for the former two-division world champion.
