WBO interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis (26-2, 21 KOs) is totally focused on a bout with Juan Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) for the WBO 135 pound title, but the Mexican is scheduled to be in action at the MGM Casino in Las Vegas on May 1st in an HBO pay-per-view show and the opponent could be the former world champion Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KOs). Hatton-who was in Sydney Australia recently as a guest of Bill Treacy stated on national television that Juan Marquez was a possible opponent in his 2010 comeback plans.
Katsidis’ trainer Brendan Smith said, “Our total focus is on Marquez, not on any one else at this stage, there is a report that Marquez has been granted one more exemption, but we don’t believe that. Apparently the report was coming out of Mexico. I have contacted the WBO, but I haven’t had a response due to the Christmas break. It doesn’t make any sense, however. If Marquez fights again at light welterweight he’s not coming back to lightweight, it puts a big hold on all the lightweight division. He (Marquez) has already cashed in for a super-fight against Floyd Mayweather, if he’s going to cash in again, well, let the (WBO lightweight) title go. There’s been a lot of talk about Ricky Hatton, but is he going to be ready by then?” Smith said. Katsidis-who is from Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia is now based in Las Vegas with his wife and child.
