Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KOs) regained the WBA super middleweight with a third round demolition of reigning titleholder Brian Magee (36-5-1, 25 KOs) on Saturday night at the BOXEN Arena in Herning, Denmark. Kessler dropped Magee with a body shot in round two and after another body shot Magee turned his back and was counted again by referee Luis Pabon. Kessler then floored Magee at the beginning of the third and the carnage was halted. Time was :24. Kessler got a measure of Danish revenge against Magee, who had has previously knocked out Kessler’s countrymen Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen.
“It feels great to be champion again,” Kessler said. “We planned to go to the body and it worked very well. I am back at the very top, I am ready for everybody out there at super-middleweight.”
Magee praised Kessler afterwards. “He is a great champion and he deserved to win today. I never recovered from the first knock-down, which was a huge shot from him. I tried my best but couldn´t beat Kessler tonight. Congratulations to him.”
The victory gives Kessler plenty of options. “This is another great win for Mikkel,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “2012 was a big year for the Viking Warrior. First he destroyed Allan Green with huge left, now he stopped the reigning WBA champion with his right to the body. We will now carefully plan the next steps. There are a lot of great fights to be made.”
Light heavyweight Rudy Markussen (38-3, 25 KOs) annihilated Daniel Regi (16-8, 8 KOs). The bout was halted 2:12 into round one after Regi had been down multiple times.
Jr middleweight Guido Pitto (16-1, 7 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Reda Zam Zam (27-2, 13 KOs).
