Attorneys representing WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and former champion Oleg Maskaev both gave closing statements on Monday at the close of arbitration to determine if Maskaev will indeed get the next shot against Klitschko. The Maskaev camp is optimistic that a preliminary decision will be reached by tomorrow (Friday, June 19) with an explanatory statement released by the arbitrator sometime next week. “Klitschko is the one we want, the one that the WBC ordered and we are the one designated the mandatory challenger by the WBC,” said Maskaev manager Fred Kesch. Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) is coming off a defense against then mandatory challenger, Juan Carlos Gomez in March. Maskaev (36-6, 27 KOs) has won two fights since being knocked out in March of 2008 by Samuel Peter. Maskaev and Klitschko, meanwhile fought as amateurs, with Maskaev coming out the winner via early knockout.
