Latin Fury 12 shaping up

Chicago heavyweight Fres Oquendo has signed to take on unbeaten Olympic gold medalist Odlanier Solis of Cuba on Top Rank’s “Island Warriors – Latin Fury 12” at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, October 10. Bob Arum of Top Rank made the announcement today. Oquendo has a record of 31-5 with 20 knockouts. He has fought in 12 title bouts for world and minor titles. Oquendo, born in Puerto Rico, last fought in July and stopped Bruce Seldon. Solis, with two amateur wins over the legendary three-time Olympic gold medal winner Felix Savon, won a World Junior Championship in 1998, three World Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2005 as well as an Olympic gold medal in 2004. Solis, promoted by Top Rank and Arena Box, has a pro record of 14-0 with 10 knockouts. Solis and Oquendo will box 10 rounds.
In the main event, world champion Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico will take on Rogers Mtagwa of Philadelphia. Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa of Cuba will defend against Whyber Garcia of Panama.
Super welterweight Pawel Wolak of New Jersey has also been added to the PPV card. He replaces USA Olympian Vanes Martirosyan who asked to be moved to Top Rank’s Latin Fury 13 title card on Dec. 19. Martirosyan said he wants to be with his chief trainer Freddie Roach who is heading to the Philippines to work with Manny Pacquiao. Wolak will be in the opening televised bout, taking on Carlos Nascimento of Brazil.
John Duddy, who is eying a future fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., is also on the ‘Island Warriors – Latin Fury 12’ card at Madison Square Garden. Chavez Jr will be there, as his younger brother Omar is on the card in a six round bout.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
