Leapai KOs Orlov

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Former world heavyweight contender Alex Leapai (24-3-3, 19 KOs) scored a crushing KO of Russian giant Evgeny Orlov (13-9-1, 8 KOs) at 1:48 of round four at the Broncos Leagues club, Red Hill, Queensland, Australia. Orlov, 6’9 and 316 pounds, presented problems in rounds one and two as he used his height and reach effectively and also tied up Leapai when he got in close, but in round three Leapai found the range for his power shots hurting the Russian with head and body shots, and in round four a power right uppercut dropped Erlov cold and referee Tony Kettlewell counted the importation out. Orlov committed several infringements during the contest and in round two was deducted a point for continually pushing Leapai’s head down.

Leapai spoke to Fightnews and said, “Erlov was difficult opponent because of his style and size and weight of 316 pounds and 6’9, but I knew it was only a matter of time before I connected with a bomb which I did in round four. If I hit Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko with the same punch they would be counted out also.”

Noel Thorberry who is the trainer of Leapai said, “That is the first time Orlov has been counted out so that is a testament to Leapai ‘s power. World rated heavyweight Kubrat Pulev had problems with Orlov and could not put him down and had to be satisfied with a disqualification win in round seven. Alex is ready for the best in the world including Robert Helenius who has refused to fight Leapai. Orlov has boxed Helenius and Alexander Povetkin in the gym and said Leapai would easily KO both of them. I want to keep Orlov in Australia and I predict he would defeat all our Aussie heavyweights with the exception of Kali Meehan and Solomon Haumona.”

In the main supporting bout that was billed for the Queensland State super middleweight title, Dennis Hogan (5-0-1, 3 KOs) was crowned the winner at 1:58 of round four over veteran Glen Fitzpatrick (15-17-2, 6 KOs). Hogan controlled the bout from round one.

In heavyweight action Brett Peters (3-0, 2 KOs), 207 pounds, stopped Kyle Brumby (1-5-1), 208 pounds, at 2:19 of round one.

Also light heavyweight Lucas Nixon (1-0) made a successful debut when he scored a three round majority decision over the more experienced Paul Edwards (9-3, 4 KOs). Scores were 30-27, 29-28, 29-29. Promoter Noel Thornberry.
