Dating back to the times of Carmen Basilio and the DeJohn brothers, Syracuse has always been a hot bed for the sport of boxing. Most recently, Syracuse has begun to shine once again at the amateur level, with multiple New York State Golden Gloves and National Champions. This Thursday at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Liverpool, NY, six local upstate NY amateur stars will be stepping into the ring in JKJ Promotions’ “Finding the Next Champion” series that showcases local talent to the Syracuse community.
The event will feature four multi-time Golden Glove champions, as they embark on the preliminary stages of their professional careers: Albany lightweight Will Madera (1-0), Utica super middleweight Mike “Too Sharp” Rycraft (debut), and from Syracuse middleweight Martez “The Punisher” Potter (3-0), super middleweight Frank Alagna (1-0), jr middleweight Jimmy “El Toro” Garcia (debut), and super middleweight “Bad” Chad Hayden (debut).
Canastota’s Jay Johnson Jr. of JKJ Championship Promotions is working very closely with many of the same managers who helped bring Canastota’s Carmen Basilio and Billy Backus to national fame. His goal is to bring a world champion back to the upstate region, and breakthrough into the national spotlight.
