After a 10 round majority decision loss to Edgar Santana three years ago, Josesito Lopez stepped away from boxing and analyzed his future in the sport. After a lot of soul searching, he decided to give boxing another go. Based on his recent success, especially in his last fight, he is glad he stuck to boxing. Riding a seven-fight winning streak and becoming a legitimate contender in the process, Lopez returns to the ring on May 27th against once-beaten Steve Chambers in Reno, NV, promoter Dan Goossen told Fightnews.com on Monday afternoon. The bout will headline an ESPN2 “Friday Night Fights” card.
Lopez, who campaigns in at the 140-pound limit, will defend his regional title against Chambers in the 10 round bout.
Lopez, (29-3, 17 KO’s) from Riverside, CA, is coming off an impressive seventh round knockout over previously-unbeaten Mike Dallas on January 28th. The bout was televised on “Friday Night Fights,” as well as his hard-fought eight round unanimous decision over Marvin Cordova Jr. in August.
Lopez is co-promoted by Goossen Tutor and Thompson Boxing Promotions.
Chambers, who is the younger brother of heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers, also has an impressive unbeaten streak. He has not lost in 20 fights, since a four round unanimous decision to Michael Weaver almost six years ago.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Chambers is 23-1-1 1 NC, with six knockouts.
