Lyell cruises in tune-up

Former IBF world title challenger, Billy Lyell (25-11) outclassed journeyman Rahsaan Abdul Blackburn over four rounds Saturday night at the Boyd County Community Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Lyell was credited with a knockdown in round two and went on to win by scores of 40-35 on all judges’ scorecards. Lyell stated, “I wanted to get several rounds of work in order to stay sharp going into my showdown with Daniel Jacobs (24-1) on Showtime in Brooklyn, NY on April 27th.”

In a battle of unbeaten light heavies, Brian Holstein (5-0) defeated Tom Hanshaw Jr. (2-1) by a 4 round unanimous decision, while local junior middleweight prospect Travis Hanshaw (7-0) remained unbeaten with a six round unanimous decision over Nathan Petty. In a crowd-pleasing slugfest, super middleweights Kirklyn Phelps (1-0-1) and Anthony Kelly (0-5-1) battled to a four round draw.

In the only stoppage on the card, welterweight Afrim Mema evened his mark to 2-2 after a third round TKO over debuting Greg Bakstonvia in a scheduled 4 rounder. The show was promoted by Tom Hanshaw’s Eastcoast Promotions.
