Osborne Machimana returns to action after fifteen months when he defends his South African heavyweight title against the inexperienced Bull Moravha at the Nasrec Indoor Arena, Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon. The 31-year-old Machimana (17-6-1, 12 KOs) won the title in April 2005 when he stopped Anton Nel in the fifth round and has made successful defenses against Wiseman Dlomo, Jake Els, Peter Cronje and Miyan Solomons on two occasions.
In February 2008 he stopped former WBU and WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders at 2 minutes 41 seconds of the first round.
Maravha from Venda in the Limpopo Province, who has a reported record of 4-4-1, 1 KO, has not fought at the same level as the champion.
In October 2008 Muravha was stopped inside two rounds by Jake Els who was outclassed and stopped in the fifth round by Machimana.
Muravha scored victories over Basil Ray (tko 3) and Wiseman Dlomo (pts 6) in 2009. However, the opposition was limited as Ray had a reported record of 2-3 and Dlomo 6-6-1.
Even though he has been inactive for a long period the champion must be favored to retain the title with an inside the distance victory.
The tournament is presented by Pat Molefe of Rainbow Promotions.
