Two time-world title challenger Mahir Oral (28-3-2, 11 KOs) will return to the ring on the undercard of the January 22 Sauerland Event promotion featuring IBF middleweight champion Sebastian Sylvester defense against Mehdi Bouadla at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Oral will face Jozsef Matolcsi (28-13, 19 KOs).
Oral says he considered retirement after his loss to Sylvester last October. “I was already in a world title fight against Arthur Abraham and lost. But for the fight [against Sylvester] in Rostock, I had the best chance of all. I really wanted to be world champion, but it didn’t work out. Then I dropped out of sight and was considering whether I should hang up my boxing gloves. My wife Ferda motivated me and built my confidence back up. Now I’ve analyzed the last fight and I know where my weaknesses are, so it makes sense to make a new start.”
The 30-year-old Oral was praised for his gutsy performances against Abraham and Sylvester. “Sure, I have a great fighting spirit. But it doesn’t get me anywhere just because people are amazed at how much I can take. I must win, and win the title. This is the only thing that counts.”
In the future, he plans to work with a personal trainer in addition to head boxing trainer Bülent Baser. “With better fitness and adequate preparation, I believe I can achieve my goals. I somehow have a feeling that I’ll get another world title shot.”
