A June 22 showdown between WBA Welterweight Champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KOs) and Adrien “The Problem” Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) was announced today by Golden Boy at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, resulting in a back-and-forth bashing session.
“These are the two biggest talkers in the sport,” was the opening understatement by Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer. “We can imagine the kind of fireworks we will see here. This is champion against champion.”
Broner was full of respect, at least at first.
“Paulie is going to come and fight,” said Broner. “He always comes to fight. He’s only been beaten by four guys, and those guys were world champions. This, his fifth loss, will be by another world champion. At the end of the day, he is still going to be a world class fighter but he is just getting his ass [beat] by champions.”
It only got worse from there:
“I will bring a guest who is one of my closest friends now,” Broner taunted. “She’s Jessica Well, ‘Jess’ as he used to call her, is her ex-girlfriend, but she is my sweetheart now. She told me some things . . . I don’t know if I should, since it was he-said/she-said. Maybe you [Paulie] should do more push-ups. Maybe God didn’t bless you with power.
“Long story short, they broke up. Paulie wasn’t hitting it hard enough and now she is with a heavy hitter.”
Malignaggi retaliated by stepping up to the podium to ask one of the members of his team to help comb his hair like Adrien Broner.
“He uses brushes,” said Malignaggi. “I use combs. I don’t get started without combing my hair.”
Malignaggi then clarified the situation with Jessica.
“That was pretty good, Adrien,” he said. “I gave you credit but I got to come at you hard.
“Here is the difference between me and Adrien,” he told the press. “We both got money but I am good looking. There are girls that are closer to you and then there is something that we call ‘weekend pussy.’
“And that is Jessica. Jessica can do whatever she wants. Adrien thought he was getting closer but the only weekend pussy he gets is the one he pays for.”
Malignaggi continued to bash Broner.
“Your name is feminized to begin with,” he told “The Problem.” “Your mom named you Adrien because she thought you were a bitch.”
“Paulie is more of a girl’s name,” Broner responded.
“Now you are fighting a real fighter,” Malignaggi ignored Broner. “You know what happens when you fight a real fighter? They punch you back and now you are coming to a real weight class.
“Hopefully after I beat his ass, he will get his own personality and character. Then, we’ll meet the real Adrien Broner.”
. . . .
Malignaggi vs. Broner will take place Saturday June 22 and live on Showtime from the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn New York for Malignaggi’s WBA welterweight title. The Showtime card will be a tripleheader and the co- feature will be the heavyweight rematch between Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (25-1-1, 19KOs) vs. Jonathan Banks (29-1-1, 19KOs). Opening up the Showtime tripleheader in a showdown between two undefeated junior welterweights as Phil LoGrego (25-0, 14KOs) will take on Shawn Porter (20-0-1,14KOs).
