Patrick Malinga retained his South African lightweight title for the third time when he stopped Vusumzi Tyatyeka at 58 seconds into the eighth round at Uitenhage Indoor Centre, near Port Elizabeth, on Sunday. After a slow start Malinga, 33, landed a solid right to the head that stunned Tyatyeka, 23, in round eight and as referee Steven Simon picked up the count, the challengers corner threw in the towel to save their battered fighter. The champion, whose record improved to 27 wins in 35 bouts, including 24 stoppages, had his hands full to keep Tyatyeka 6-2; 5 at bay during the first half of the bout. However, experience and conditioning saw him take control and complete an impressive victory.
