Italian young gun Luca Marasco (14-0, 5 KOs) retained his National title at lightweight limit for the first time in front of his supporters at the Palasport Italcementi in Bergamo, Italy on Friday night. Rising star Marasco outscored vicious challenger and former Italian titlist Simone ‘Chico’ Califano (13-3, 7 KOs) over ten entertaining and strong rounds of boxing.

It was a heated fight, with a football-like atmosphere with the fans screaming loudly to support their hero. Both fighters gave more than expected, though, and went toe-to-toe without any stop in a real ‘Mexican battle’. The clash is easily the “Fight of the Year” so far in Italy. The taller Califano started the contest at a high pace, trying to establish his jab early on but the local boy, trained by Egidio Bugada, was able to solve matters and close the distance with his better hand speed and used his superior ringcraft with an effective strong workrate to gain control of the clash. Califano tried to re-enter in the fight but he did not have the tools to counter Marasco’s speed and precision.
Marasco was simply too strong and consistent and punctuated his win stepping up gears during the last three rounds and cruised to a deserved unanimous decision win. The three judges scored it 96-94 and twice 97-93 for the undefeated Italian champ.
