Bantamweight contender and 2004 Olympian Abner Mares (18-0, 11 KO’s) battles Carlos Fulgencio (11-3-1, 7 KO’s) in an eight round fight, while jr lightweight David Rodela (13-1-3, 6 KOs) faces once-beaten Gamalier Rodriguez (8-1-2, 4 KOs) in the six round co-feature tonight at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. Fightnews spoke to both Mares and Rodela during Thursday’s weigh-in.
Abner Mares: “I want to prove that I am fine from the detachment of my retina. I’m going to be all business in there. I know that there will be a big crowd for me, but I’m not going to allow to get that in my head. As far as fighting here at Club Nokia, I never would have imagined it. It’s great because it’s going to be a televised fight. I’m ready to give a good show.”
David Rodela: “I really had a good training camp at Mavericks Gym (in Ventura, CA). I incorporated a lot of cardio like Manny (Pacquiao). I know that Rodriguez is a good fighter. We studied the film when he fought Juanito Garcia. This fight is no walk in the park for me. My plan is box and measure him. If that doesn’t work, then I’m going with plan B and that is to brawl.”
Note: Rodela has sparred in the past with Manny Pacquiao. In the first fight card of the Golden Boy Promotions “Club Nokia” series, Rodela defeated Garcia, while last year Garcia defeated Rodriguez.
