Antonio Margarito will be examined on Saturday in New York City by an ophthalmologist appointed by the New York State Athletic Commission, whose final report will be revealed on Monday when the NYSAC finally decides whether or not to grant a boxing license for Margarito to challenge WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto on December 3 at Madison Square Garden.
At a hearing on Friday, the Commission decided that ‘The Tijuana Tornado,’ who was training in Mexico, had to come to the office of another eye expert to corroborate the previous six positive results from the best specialists in the country who allegedly gave the nod to the Mexican to pursue his career.
Apparently, the NYSAC wants to go beyond a reasonable doubt to prove that Margarito was actually operated on successfully and does not have a metal plate placed in his face.
Top Rank president Bob Arum is confident that the NYSAC will certify Margarito and grant him the license, however he has a plan ‘B’ if the ruling is thumbs down, stating that he plans to keep the December 3rd date and could take the fight to Texas. Also under consideration are Mississippi and Colorado.
