Marquez to take on Cuenca April 21 in Mexico
By Miguel Maravilla
Three division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) is set to return April 21 as he takes on Argentina’s Cesar Cuenca (42-0, 1 KO) in Mexico, it was reported earlier by Marquez promoter, Zanfer Promotions. Marquez was stripped of the WBA lightweight super title after fighting outside the division in 2011. Later it appeared that WBA 140lb champion Lamont Peterson could be his next opponent but Peterson instead will be meeting Amir Khan in a rematch on May 19 in Las Vegas. That left Marquez looking for another opponent and it appears he will be fighting Cuenca at 140. Marquez, coming off another close split decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, will now take on the undefeated Argentinian Cuenca, a slick southpaw rated WBO #1 in the junior welterweight division, who will be fighting outside his native Argentina for the first time in his career as he looks to make a splash against Marquez.
