Martin returns Friday in SD

By Felipe Leon

Spanish language network Telefutura returns to America’s Finest City, San Diego, CA, with their weekly “Solo Boxeo Tecate” series on Friday night when Don Chargin Promotions and Jorge Marron Productions in association with Golden Boy Promotions and Bobby D. Presents feature undefeated super bantamweight California State champion Christopher Martin (19-0-2, 5KOs) as he takes on hard hitting veteran Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza (29-2, 20KOs) in the eight round main event. The seven-bout fight card will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel located in Kearny Mesa, a mid-town suburb of San Diego.

San Diego will be welcoming home Martin after his spectacular performance on Showtime’s ShoBox:The Next Generation a month ago where he caused a minor upset in clearly defeating up-and-coming prospect Chris Avalos despite the split decision that was announced.

As Martin predicted before the bout, he was able to control the ten rounds with his speed and defensive skills as he completely shut down the aggressive style of Lancaster, CA’s Avalos. Now Martin will prove his mettle against the experienced Araiza who is coming off his only second defeat in his pro career when he challenged William Gonzalez for the WBO Latino bantamweight title last April and was stopped in two rounds.

The thirty-one year old Araiza began his career with a loss to former IBF minimumweight champion Roberto “Mako” Leyva before rattling off twenty-six consecutive wins, most of them by knockout. In ’04 he began a five year exile from the sport only to come back in 2009 and string together four consecutive wins including a six round decision over the always tough Benji Garcia.

In the semi-main event, undefeated welterweight Luis Grajeda (10-0, 7KOs) of Chihuahua, MX, will take on the always entertaining Alan Sanchez (5-2, 2KOs) of Fairfield, CA, in a eight round contest. Grajeda, who was an amateur star in his native Mexico, has performed in San Diego before where he earned a tough unanimous decision over Christian Favela while this will mark Sanchez’s fourth visit to the 4 Points where he never fails to earn fight of the night consideration.

Fleshing out the card will be tough Pablo “Bronco” Armenta (2-0-1) of San Diego taking on Escondido, CA’s Alejandro Cruz (3-11-2, 2KOs) in a featherweight four rounder while hard hitting Cuban middleweight Lester Gonzalez (11-0, 6KOs) is slated against the always feared TBA.

Three more fights round out the night.

The Four Points by Sheraton is located on 8110 Aero Drive, San Diego, CA, 92123. For ticket info, please contact the Four Points at 858.277.8888 or Jorge Marron Productions at 619.743.0698.
