Mexico’s Gabriel “Rey” Martinez (24-1-1, 13 KOs), who suffered a severe injury in his fight with Jesus Soto-Karass (24-4-3, 16 KOs), last weekend in Chicago, says he is hoping for a rematch after his cut heals. In the fight, an accidental head butt in round one forced the ringside physician to call off the ten-round welterweight bout, resulting in a “no contest” ruling. Following the suturing of the cut, Martinez received instructions of no physical contact for 30 days.
“I would love to get the fight with Soto-Karass again,” says the disappointed Martinez. “I think that with that first round, the public was able to see that we were going to engage in a good fight. Of course I feel I would’ve won the fight and moved on to bigger things.”
