Martínez-Munguía heats up

PR Best

WBO super featherweight champion Román ‘Rocky’ Martínez (23-0-1, 14 KOs) of Puerto Rico is training hard in Puerto Rico for his upcoming title defense against Gonzalo Munguía (17-6-3, 13 KOs) of Nicaragua. The bout will take place May 29 at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico with PR Best Boxing (Iván and Peter Rivera) in association with All Star Boxing’s Félix ‘Tutico’ Zabala promoting the event. Upon reading Munguía’s recent interview on Fightnews, Martínez responded with the following.

On Gonzalo’s commentary that he hasn’t fought anybody:

“I have consistently demonstrated that I am a fighter who has never run away from any opponent and I face my rivals face to face. I’ve never tended to go into bickering with the boxers who I faced before, and this will not be the first time for me to do this, he has every right to think whatever he wants about me, but all I ask of him is that he comes prepared to support his comments because if not it will not be a long night for him.”

On Gonzalo’s commentary that Santos Benavides wasn’t in shape when he fought him:

“I refuse to talk negatively of Santos Benavides. He had tremendous condition in our fight and he proved to be a great fighter by holding six hard rounds with me. That’s why I do not understand the need to criticize him as Gonzalo does.”

On Gonzalo’s commentary that he has no power:

I understand that a boxer can not talk about the power of the other until they fight and on May 29 he will have the opportunity to qualify and appreciate my power firsthand.
