Fresh off of his unanimous decision victory over colombian veteran Walter Estrada, the stage is now set for Ramon “Rocky” Martinez (21-0-1, 12 KOs) to challenge WBO super featherweight champion Nicky Cook of England in early 2009. Martinez gave his thoughts on possibly having to fight in England for his first world title fight, anticipation of an action packed fight with Cook, and overcoming Cook’s fight experience edge.
Did you feel you needed to score a knockout of Estrada in your last fight to make a statement going into your challenge of world champion Nicky Cook?
The important thing was to get the victory and fortunately I did so unanimously by decision. I came out the fight with the win and without any injury so now I can focus on Cook.
Any word officially on when your fight with Cook will be?
No offical date as of yet but the early part of 2009 is a strong possibility.
So will you be going back to training camp immediately?
Yeah. I will take a short break for the holidays but I will be right back in training camp immediately to prepare for Cook.
There is a possbility that the fight could end up in England. I’m sure you’re very aware of how difficult it is to win in England as a visiting world title challenger correct?
I’m aware but for me it doesn’t matter where the fight is. At the end of the day it’s just me and him in the ring. I will train very hard as I always do and my expecations are that I will become world champion.
What do you know about Cook?
I feel that our styles are going to make for a very exciting and action filled fight. Anyone who has seen me fight knows that those are the kind fights that I like to be involved in.
Cook has an edge in fight experience on you. Do you see this as a major factor you will have to overcome in the fight to be victorious?
I think at this stage of my career that I’m ready to challenge for the world title as does my promoter PR Best Boxing (Ivan & Peter Rivera). I’ve been in all different types of fights and have remained unbeaten. I’m very confident that my own experiences and proper preparation will have me ready for a successful challenge.
