Mashego-Nyilawila Aug 21

By Ron Jackson

South African junior middleweight champion Tshepo Mashego meets Karama Nyilawila of Tanzania in an International ten round fight at the Nasrec Indoor Arena near Johannesburg on Friday night. The tournament is promoted by Paul Tshehla of Mpumalanga Promotions. The 30-year-old Mashego was in outstanding form in June this year when he outpointed Vincent Vuma to regain the SA junior middleweight title. Mashego (17-9, 9 KOs) is a better fighter than his record suggests and is an experienced campaigner who has been in with quality fighters like Felix Sturm, William Gare, Arsen Khachatrian and Jamie Pittman. Nyilawila who has a reported record of (10-5-1, 6 KOs) is a bit of an unknown quantity and has only fought outside his home country on one occasion and that was in August 2008 when Mohammed Akrong stopped him in the ninth round in a fight for the vacant African Boxing Union middleweight title.

In 2009 he beat Robert Mross, Hussein Chiwa and in his last fight in April he outpointed Mada Maugo for the Tanzania African Boxing Commission middleweight title. He had lost to the only recognized opponents on his record Rashid Matumla (twice) and Hassan Matumla.

The South African should be too experienced for the 25-year-old Nyilawila.

In the main supporting bout Patrick Masango and Sifiso Msibi meet over ten rounds for the vacant Mpumalanga junior lightweight title.

Other bouts on the card are Junior middleweight, 8 rounds: Page Tshesane vs Malibongwe Ndzube; bantamweight, 6 rounds: Lwazi Mzolisi vs Thami Mbonani; middleweight, 6 rounds: Emmanuel Duma vs Khampathe Mpambanyeni; light heavyweight, 4 rounds: Shaun Goodall vs Vincent Mulaudzi; junior heavyweight: 4 rounds: Khayeni Hlongwe vs Ben Moakamela.
