Tshepo Mashego scored a unanimous ten round points decision over Tanzanian Karama Nyilawila at the Nasrec Indoor Arena near Johannesburg on Friday night. Judges Wally Snowball and Alfred Buqwana scored it 99-91 and judge Joseph Chaane had it 99-92.The 30-year-old SA junior middleweight champion boxing from behind his educated left jab made a slow start but picked up the pace from round three to outbox the shorter Nyilawila 70.18 kg.
Nyilawila, 25, remained dangerous throughout and was able to score with his right hand on occasions. However, he tended to barge in at times and push his opponent and received numerous warnings from referee Amos Lusenga. The fight never really rose to any heights but Mashego 69.18 kg was in control throughout and dished out some serious punishment at times with right hands to the head and a number of uppercuts. Mashego improved his record to 18-9, with 9 knockouts and Nyilawila, dropped to 10-6-1; 6.
In the main supporting bout Patrick Masango 58.04 kg outpointed Sifiso Msibi 58.36 kg over 10 action packed rounds to win the vacant Mpumalanga junior lightweight title. Masango takes his record to 19-10-4; 8 and Msibi drops to 6-11-1; 3.
The tournament was promoted by Paul Tshehla of Mpumalanga Promotions.
