Mathews blasts out Woodhouse in four

In an interesting lightweight fight, Commonwealth titleholder Derry Mathews (35-8-2, 19 KOs) scored an explosive one-punch fourth round TKO over “Trollhunter” Curtis Woodhouse (19-6, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Olympia in Liverpool, England. Mathews landed a right hand that dropped Woodhouse and the fight was waved off when Woodhouse got up and reeled around the ring. Time was 1:14.

Woodhouse made headlines outside the ring in March when he used social media to describe his day as he tracked down a Twitter troll, eventually turning up on the troll’s street before getting an apology.

Unbeaten local jr middleweight Liam Smith (15-0-1, 5 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Erick Ochieng (14-2, 4 KOs) to claim the vacant British title. Good two-way action throughout, but Smith did more down the stretch to win by scores of 117-112, 117-112, 116-113.

Unbeaten super middleweight “Rocky from Stocky” Fielding (16-0, 9 KOs) annihilated Mohammed Akrong (19-6, 15 KOs) in the first round to win the vacant Commonwealth title. Fielding dropped Akrong with a left hook in the opening seconds, then finished him with his follow up barrage. The fight lasted 65 seconds.

Unbeaten super middleweight Callum Smith (8-0, 6 KOs) blew away Patrick Mendy (14-7-1, 1 KO) in the first round to win the vacant BBBofC English title.

Peter Spencer W4 Matt Seawright (jr welterweight), pro debut for Spencer, Seawright now a dismal 5-82-5, 0 KOs.

For 18 years,® has delivered daily boxing news to fight fans around the globe. From the beginning, we have always kept Fightnews free to our readers and relied on advertiser support. Anyway, the Miami Herald, The Guardian, and Wikipedia among others have been using the “crowdfunding” revenue model, so we thought we’d test it too.

Please consider helping out. You’re not obligated to, but even a $1 pledge would really help. And if we reach our goal, we plan to upgrade our server and maybe even nuke the ads altogether. Wouldn’t that be nice?
