Promoter Mario Margossian delivered a solid fight card last night at the Gimnasio Municipal Nº 1 in Trelew, Chubut, Argentina. In an upset former world title challenger Walter Matthysse (26-5, 25 KOs) was shockingly knocked out in the fifth round by journeyman Oscar Veliz (26-15-2, 5 KOs). Matthysse who began his career at (25-0) has now lost four fights in row and five of his last six since his fight with Paul Williams. All losses suffered by Matthysse have been by knockout. Also Claudia Lopez (13-4, 3 KOs) defeated Betina Garina (10-6-2, 2 KOs) by sixth round TKO to win the vacant WBA woman’s featherweight title.
The Lopez-Garina bout was competitive throughout the first 3 rounds but the southpaw Lopez really begin to deliver a beating to Garina after that. Lopez continually beat Betina to the punch in rounds four-six with several head snapping shots. Lopez pinned Betina against the ropes in round six dropping an array of power punches that left the referee no choice but to stop the fight. With the win, Lopez eyes a fight with regular WBA champion Hyun-Mi Choi or a rematch with fellow Argentinean and unified super bantamweight champion Marcela ‘La Tigresa’ Acuna who defeated Lopez in 2007.
Flyweight Raul Medina (24-9-3, 9 KOs) defeated Ariel Alassia (10-4-1,4 KOs) by seventh round TKO to retain his Argentinean flyweight title. Medina once lost by decision to the current world champion Vic Darchinyan.
