Lucas Matthysse (27-0, 25 KO’s) of Argentina retained his WBO Latino junior welterweight title against Rogelio Castañeda (26-16-3, 8 KO’s of Mexico by way of first round KO on Friday night at the Estadio Cubierto Newell Old Boys in Rosario, Argentina. After a brief feeling out period Matthysse dropped Castañeda half way through the round with a left hook. Castañeda beat the count but was on unsteady legs and the bout continued on. Moments later a barrage of punches sent Castañeda to the canvas again but he again beat the count but visibly still shaken. Matthysse finished matters with a series of punches puncuated with an overhand right that sent Castañeda crashing hard to the canvas for the third and final time. The corner through in the towel and the referee waved off the bout at the same time. The bout was a rematch of a 2008 no contest where the bout was prematurely ended after an accidental clash of heads cut Castañeda.
Former two-time world title challenger Sebastián Luján (34-5-2, 22 KO’s) of Argentina successfully defended his WBC Latino welterweight title against Emilio Julio (16-8-1, 8 KO’s) of Colombia by way of seventh round TKO. Lujan dominated the fight swarming Julio with a volume of body and head shots. Luján had Julio reeling so bad in round 5 that Julio excessively held so much the referee deducted a point. More punishment followed in round six by Luján and Julio stayed on his stool and did not answer the bell for round seven.
