In a rather untidy brawl Evans Mbamba of South Africa and Mario Brones from Mexico fought to a 12 round majority draw for the vacant World Boxing Federation junior featherweight belt at the Graceland Hotel & Casino in Secunda on Saturday night. Two judges scored it 114-114 and the third judge had it a rather way out 117-111 for Mbamba. The southpaw Mbamba (55.34kg) appeared rather unfortunate not to come away with a close decision as he scored with right and lefts to the head throughout. However, Mbamba spent too much time with his back against the ropes while allowing Briones (55.24kg) to throw combinations at him, most of which landed on the South Africans arms and gloves. The 31-year-old Mbamba takes his record to 18-4; 9 and Briones, 27, goes to 24-3-2; 18.
The referee was Darryl Ribbink of South Africa and the tournament was presented by Thinus Stardom of World Sport Promotions.
On the same card Gabisile Tshabalala of South Africa was knocked out in the seventh round by Shannon O’Connell from Australia for the vacant WBF women’s featherweight title.
