Cleutus Mbhele retained his Gauteng bantamweight title with a majority ten round draw against Cebo Ngema in a closely fought contest at the Nasrec Expo Centre near Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon. Judge Alfred Buqwana scored it 97-93 for Mbhele whilst judges Phillip du Randt and Joe Chaane scored it 95-95. The drawn decision was a bit harsh on the 22 year-old Mbhele (52’82kg) who appeared to box his way to a comfortable decision with his better boxing skills throughout. Ngema, 23, made a fast start and possibly shaded the first two rounds before the champion picked up the pace in round three. Boxing from behind his southpaw right jab Mbhele was in control throughout piling up the points with some good counter punching as the aggressive Ngema (53.22kg) pressed forward. Mbhele takes his record 14-4-3; 7 and Ngema goes to 9-3-1; 6.
The standard of boxing on the undercard was poor.
