Former WBO 135 pound champion Erin McGowan (14-1,7KOs) returns to ring action on September 21 when she will challenge Delfine Persoon(19-1,7KOs) over ten rounds for the vacant IBF lightweight crown at the Lotto Arena, Antwerpen, Belgium. McGowan captured the WBO world title in 2010 by defeating Lyndsey Scragg on points over ten rounds but lost her most recent bout against Monica Silvina Acosta in 2011 by disputed majority ten round decision in Argentina.
McGowan said, “Delfine Persoon is a tough fighter and I expect a very tough fight. She has won the EBU and WIBF (Women’s International Boxing Federation) Lightweight titles in the past against some good fighters. I believe however I’m more skilful than her and I really need to use my boxing skills and ringcraft to beat her. I never underestimate any fighter and surely I do not underestimate this girl hence my team and I felt I should base camp in Las Vegas in preparations for this fight to leave no stone unturned.
“I have been in Las Vegas for a week now and sparring with one of the best female fighters in the world in Layla McCarter. McCarter usually refuses to spar other girls. She prefers to spar men but I was fortunate enough to have her agree to spar with me .”
“I would like to also thank my manager, Butch Gottlieb, my trainers, Habby Heske and Rodney Crisler, my sponsors, Elcord Building and Saferight, and all my fans around the world for their continued support. And I can promise you right now I will be IBF lightweight world champion come September.”
